Russia-Belarus cooperation: Nuclear research reactor may be placed near Minsk

The Belarusian National Academy of Sciences and the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom are discussing the creation of a nuclear research reactor in the energy and nuclear research institute Sosny.

The institute is located 7 km from Minsk.

The reactor may be launched by the ‘middle of the next decade’, the official website of the Union State reports.

“A memorandum of intent on cooperation between the governments of Russia and Belarus has been already signed. So, if all goes well, there will be three nuclear reactors in the middle of the next decade in the Republic; two of which will support its economy, and one – science,” the press rervice of the Union State says.

A nuclear research and technology center may be established once the reactor is available, Andrey Kuzmin, Director of the Sosny institute, told state-run news agency BelTA.

Apart from the reactor and engineering systems the center will include a radiochemical department, a materials science department, a testing department, and a science department.
