Russia bars 'extremist' British comedy The Death of Stalin

Russia’s Culture Ministry revoked a film distribution certificate of the British satirical comedy The Death of Stalin by director Armando Iannucci.

It was expected to premiere in Russia on January, 25.

Russian MPs and cilture figures attended a private screening that took place some days ago. Many of them were in favour of banning the movie.

Earlier, Russian filmmakers sent a joint letter to the Minister of Culture with a request to drop the British movie from screens. They called The Death of Staling ‘libel’.

In Belarus, the film will start to be shown on January 25. It is unknown whether any change will be made to the distribution plan.

Unlike their Russian colleagues, who watch a movie before the premiere, the Belarusian Culture Ministry gets acquainted with it on the first day of the domestic release and gives its opinion after the event.

“It depends on a decision of the Ministry of Culture whether we will remove the film from the repertoire or show further. We issue our own distribution certificates, and movies which are prohibited or cancelled in Russia may have a completely different release story in Belarus,” says Anastasiya Hurina, a representative of the Silver Screen cinema.

The plot of the film is built around the struggle for power in the Soviet Union after the death of Josef Stalin in 1953.

(UPD) The Ministry of Culture of Belarus has asked to put selling tickets on hold; the officials want to view the film before the release in Belarus.
