Russia asking Belarus not to supply Norwegian fish

Rosselkhoznadzor has sent a letter to the Department of Veterinary and Food Supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Belarus stating that remains of prohibited and harmful substances were repeatedly found in fish products made of Norwegian raw materials and sent to Russia, the press service of the agency reports.

At the end of October 2019, Rosselkhoznadzor informed the veterinary service of Norway (Mattelsynet)”about the expediency of the inspection of Norwegian enterprises producing aquaculture products (salmon, trout)”.

“However, the Norwegian agency, referring to the tight schedule, said that it would not be able to receive the Rosselkhoznadzor delegation,” the report says.

According to the Russian side, from January 1 to November 15, 2019, more than 10.2 thousand tons of such products were imported from Norway to Belarus, of which 93% was sent to Russia. At the same time, Belarus allegedly did not take all the necessary veterinary samples.

“Taking into account the lack of consent to the inspection by Mattelsynet, as well as insufficient monitoring of Norwegian fish raw materials, conducted by the State Service of Belarus, Rosselkhoznadzor asked the Belarusian side to ensure the prevention of fish supplies made of Norwegian raw materials to Russia,” reads the statement.

Earlier, in October this year, Rosselkhoznadzor introduced a regime of enhanced laboratory control over fish products of Santa Bremor JV in connection with the trout bacteria found in them.

Supplies of Norwegian fish to Russia were stopped in 2014 in response to the EU sanctions due to the events in Crimea.
