'Rosatom' plans to launch Belarusian NPP in 2020

This was announced by Director General of “Rosatom” Aleksey Lihachev. The representative of the Russian company also stressed that according to the instructions of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, a nuclear power plant in Astravets will be the safest in the world.

At a meeting with Likhachev, Lukashenka noted that Belarus gives very serious attention to the construction of the nuclear power plant.

Lukashenka stressed that the decision to build a nuclear power plant in Belarus was not easy due to the accident at the Charnobyl nuclear power plant.

Belarusian nuclear power plant is under construction in Astravets, 50 kilometers from Vilnius. It is planned that the first unit will be launched in 2019, the second one in the 2020. The capacity of each unit is 1,200 MW.

Despite the protests and diplomatic notes from the Lithuanian side, construction of the controversial facility continues. Official Vilnius and Warsaw have agreed not to buy electricity from the Belarusian NPP. The authorities in these countries doubt the safety of the facility. It is known that the construction of the nuclear power plant has been tarnished by incidents, and this information always reached the public with a scandalous delay.

The environmental safety of the project also remains a major issue: in particular, what plans do the authorities and nuclear energy specialists have regarding the radioactive waste. Recently it became known that landfill burial will be created in our country to put there radioactive waste.
