Restricting media access to COVID-19 statistics unacceptable -- Belsat

Belsat TV joins the demands of colleagues to open information about the epidemic to independent media. It will increase people’s confidence in statistics and calm down the information space full of fakes and inaccuracies.

The editorial staff of the channel believes that in a situation atypical for the state, the healthcare system and for every Belarusian, the only way to achieve mutual control and assistance is to have timely and open information for all citizens.

The audience of the Belsat TV comprises hundreds of thousands of Belarusians in different parts of the country, who have the right to know about COVID-19 from sources that they choose themselves. The editorial staff of the channel is convinced that one of the main tasks of every media outlet now (regardless of the form of ownership or place of registration) is to inform its readers, viewers or listeners as quickly and extensively as possible about the spread of coronavirus and effective methods of combating this infection. In such a situation, restrictions on access to information regarding the number of diseases, the geography of the spread of the disease, government measures to halt the expansion of the epidemic are unacceptable, and should even be considered a crime! An informed person who is aware of the real danger is in a much better position to do everything in his or her power not to become infected and not infect others.

Such requests and statements were recently made by our colleagues from BelaPan and NAVINY.BY, TUT.BY and the Belarusian Association of Journalists in order to get full and transparent access to information about the spread of COVID-19 in Belarus as soon as possible.

Belsat.eu is most often denied such information on the grounds of not having accreditation in Belarus. Attempts to obtain accreditation are made by the team annually.
