Relatives of political prisoner Furmanau go on hunger strike

On July 26, the mother and girlfriend of Furmanau start an open-ended hunger strike in protest against the continued detention of political prisoners.

They said so in a video message sent to several non-state media.

“We, Volha Furmanava and Volha Karakina report that at 13:00 on 26.07.2020, at 2, Valadarskaha Street, Minsk, we announce an open-ended hunger strike in protest against the illegal detention and imprisonment of Dzmitry Furmanau and other political prisoners under Article 342,” reads the appeal.

Alyaksandr Furmanau’s father supports them, but he can’t go on a hunger strike due to health condition — he has a disability of the second group.

The Furmanau family seeks the release of other political prisoners and termination of the criminal case.

A 35-year-old Hrodna resident Dzmitry Furmanau was detained on May 29 during a picket to collect signatures for the nomination of presidential candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya. He was a regional coordinator. On the same day Siarhey Tsikhanouski and his associates were detained.
