Record amount of capital leaves Russia in 2018

The net outflow of private capital from Russia increased 2.7 times last year. The withdrawn amount for the year amounted to 67.5 billion US dollars against 25.2 billion dollars in 2017, the Bank of Russia reports.

External liabilities of banks continued to decline, while foreign assets increased against the backdrop of more substantial export earnings and the accumulation of foreign currency in accounts after the suspension of its acquisition within budget rules.

“In contrast to the situation of 2016-2017, the growth of net lending to the rest of the world from other sectors was due not only to the placement of foreign assets abroad, but also the repayment of external liabilities,” the Central Bank of Russia notes.

Capital outflow in Q4 2018 was $ 36.5 billion, in the third quarter — $ 19.2 billion, in the first quarter — $ 16.2 billion. But in the second quarter of the year, an inflow of 4.3 billion was recorded.
