The Russian 102nd military base in Gyumri is virtually a town where about 5,000 troops are stationed; more 2,500 persons being members of Russian officers’ families. The base was established in the 1990s amid rising tensions betweenArmenia and Azerbaijan. There are tanks, armoured vehicles, air defense forces,MIG-29 fighters, S-300 and S-200 anti-aircraft missiles, even notorious Buk-Mmissile system. Russia does not pay the Armenian government for the military base as its existence meets political interests of Yerevan and Moscow. According to the agreement, the Russian military will be present in the base for at least 29 years. They regularly take part in international war games.
