Putin ushers in new era of professional army with no conscription

“It will take time and money to completely abandon the draft,” said the President of Russia during a meeting with staff of the scientific and production association “Energomash”, rbc.ru writes.

“We are moving in the direction of creating a professional army. Due to the increasing complexity of military equipment, only professionals can manage it,” said Vladimir Putin.

“The draft is gradually becoming a thing of the past. True, this requires time and adequate funding,” Putin added.

Russian legislation provides for the recruitment of men aged 18 to 27. The service time is one year. The reason for postponement may be the status of a full-time student of the university or the presence of two children.

This year, the representative of the General Staff of Russia, Lieutenant-General Yevgeny Burdinsky, said it was “inappropriate” to completely reject the draft because of the country’s limited financial resources.
