Putin: Big Russian companies must be able to speed up military production

Russian president Vladimir Putin urged all ‘strategic and simple large companies’, regardless of the type of ownership, to be ready to increase the production of defense items.

On November 22, the Russian leader held a meeting with Defense Ministry and defence industry senior officials and heads of ministries and regions.

According to him, the economic ability to increase the production of defense products and services quickly is a vital element of military security.

“We held detailed discussions on this topic in 2015 and 2016. Instructions were issued to modernize production, to create a reserve of material and technical resources, and to ensure the transportation of military personnel. The ministries and agencies are working on this in close cooperation with the Defense Ministry under the guidance of the Board of the Military Industrial Commission. I would like you to make short reports on this work at our meeting today and to say which shortcomings of the past few years have been settled and which are still to be dealt with,” he said.

Putin also instructed the officials to analyse the results of the war game Zapad-2017 and develop ‘additional measures to improve mobilization readiness’.

The military exercise took place in the territory of Russia and Belarus in September. According to its legend, Russian and Belarusian troops confronted the army of fictional Western countries. The maneuvers signalled Russia’s preparing for a big war, NATO representatives warned.
