Prime Ministers meeting in Mahiliou: Will Russia cut gas price for Belarus?

The Belarusian city of Mahiliou is hosting a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Belarus-Russia Union State on Thursday. The agenda of the meeting includes 27 issues.

Russian and Belarusian Prime Ministers Dmitry Medvedev and Andrey Kabyakou are attending the meeting that precedes a session of the Union State Council of Ministers.

The ministers are expected to balance Russia-Belarus trade ad economic cooperation in January-February 2016 and hold negotiations over a number of pressing issues, inclusing setting a price of Russian gas for Belarus.

Negotiating the gas price has been in progress since January. According to the Belarusian Prime Minister, it should be $80 instead of the current $142. Explaining his opinion, he repeatedly referred to the fluctuations of the Russian ruble in relation to the dollar.

In turn, Russia’s energy giant Gazprom considers it inexpedient to cut its gas prices for Belarus.
