Poroshenko pushing for Ukraine's pullout of CIS

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has called for preparing proposals on the formal termination of Ukraine’s membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) activities.

“Considering that Ukraine has never been and is not a CIS member now [it failed to ratify the CIS Statute – belsat.eu], and that the CIS refused to condemn Russia’s aggression, I would ask that we, together with the government, prepare proposals regarding the official termination of our participation in the CIS charter bodies as well as the definitive closure of Ukraine’s mission in the relevant institutions in Minsk,” Poroshenko said at the 11th Kyiv Security Forum on Thursday.

Ukraine has been an associated member of the CIS since 1993. The question of its leaving the CIS was raised after Russia’s annexation of Crimea. In 2017, CIS Secretary Sergei Lebedev reported that the Ukrainian side refused to pay membership fees.
