Political prisoner not to be released on parole


Mikhail Zhamchuzhny does not qualify for seeking parole or substitution of punishment, the administration of penal colony No. 9 in Horki said in December.

The prisoner ‘is not pursuing a better path,’ human rights centre Viasna quotes them.

In early January, it was announced that Mahiliou regional department for the execution of sentences dismissed Zhamchuzhny’s complaint against his being put a punishment cell last August and December. According to the department, the penalty enforced was ‘lawful’.

Mikhail Zhamchuzhny, a human rights activist and the founder of the “New Platform, who was collecting information on the conditions of detention in Belarus, was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment in July 2015. He was found guilty of inciting to intentional disclosure of information which constitutes an official secret, illegal purchase and sale of special technical equipment intended for secret collection of information, as well as bribery.

Three months later, his prison term was extended for another six months. Human rights activists believe Mikhail Zhamchuzhny is a political prisoner who suffered for his human rights activities.
