Political murders may happen again – former political prisoner


Mikalai Statkevich invites all indifferent people to a rally in memory of the disappeared politicians.

The action is to start at 18.00 on Wednesday near GUM department store in Minsk, the former political prisoner said on Facebook.

“The action will be devoted to the anniversary of the so called referendum of 1996 which resulted in establishing the dictatorship in Belarus,” Statkevich says.

The 2010 presidential candidate called on Belarusians to come and pay the tribute to memory of former Interior Minister Yury Zakharanka and chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Viktar Hanchar, who were deprived of positions due to their being in opposition to Lukashenka, The both were then abducted and killed on the orders of the Belarusian president, Statkevich says.

“If we stop to remind the public of the assassinations, they may happen again,” Statkevich said.

“If we forget how liberty had been taken from us, they will keep stripping us of it,” he stressed.
