Political activist Sevyarynets sentenced to 10 days of arrest for 'interview in Belarusian'

Pavel Seveyarynets, co-chairman of the organizing committee for the creation of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, was arrested on the eve of the meeting in Kurapaty, which was to be held on September 9. The politician was accused of calling for an unauthorized rally.

According to journalist Tatsiana Ulasik, judge Krapachou removed Pavel’s wife Volha from the courtroom with a five-month-old baby in her arms.

“His argument was that the hearing could hurt the child’s psyche. What a cynicism! ” wrote the journalist who attended the meeting.

According to Tatsyana, the policemen testified that Pavel “gave interviews to journalists in the Belarusian language”.

Pavel Sevyarynets was detained at the entrance to Kurapaty on September 5. Together with him was detained Zmitser Kazakevich. After five hours of detention in the Baraulyany police department, the politician was put in a remand prison.

Belarusian courts have repeatedly punished Kurapaty defenders by fines and arrests — all in all, more than 140 administrative cases were opened.
