Poland to host 3rd European Games in 2023


An Extraordinary General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) unanimously elected the Malopolska region and the city of Krakow, Poland as the Host of the 3rd edition of the European Games in 2023, the EOC official website says.

Representatives of all 50 European National Olympic Committees participated in the vote, which was held a day after the 2nd European Games grand opening ceremony in Minsk.

The proposal was presented by Andrzej Krasnicki, Chairman of the Polish Olympic Committee; Poland was the only candidate, the country’s news agency PAP reports. According to EOC president Janez Kocijancic, the city of Krakow and the Malopolska region are rich in sporting infrastacture.

Thus, Poland will take over from Belarus; currently, its capital is the venue for the high-profile sporting event. 196 countries are reported to be broadcasting the Games in which 4,000 athletes, representatives of 50 states, are participating. In total, competitions in 15 sports and 23 disciplines will take place.

For the first time it took place in 2015 in Baku; it was started rolling by Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s close friend, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, who definitely wants it to run and run. However, holding the event may cost Belarusians at least $30-40 mln.
