Poland to build fence close to Belarus, Russia, Ukraine

Poland is set to build a 1000-km long fence along its eastern border. 300 mln zlotys (about $88 mln) will be allocated to the construction.

“The law has already been drafted. We hope we start in Seprember,” Polish Agriculture Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel told Radio ZET.

The reason for constructing is neither a threat from the East nor illegal immigration. It is aimed at preventing African swine fever from spreading in Poland. The EU guaranteed financial aid, but if the promise is broken, Poland will incur the charges itself.

The fence will be located on the borders of Russia’s Kaliningrad region, Belarus and Ukraine. Acording to Polish officials, sick animals from these countries brought African swine fever to Poland. Currently there are about 700 animal disease cases.
