Poland starts construction of Baltic Pipe gas pipeline to stop using Russian gas

Construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline is starting in Poland. It will be an important step towards full diversification of gas supplies, the Polish president said.

On May 4, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the construction of the Baltic Pipe will begin in the coming days.

“If we talk about complete diversification of gas supplies to Poland, if we talk about complete independence of Poland as a recipient of gas from Russia, it will be [the construction of the Baltic Pipe pipeline] a huge step towards this independence,” said Andrzej Duda.

The Baltic Pipe gas pipeline will connect the gas networks of Norway, Denmark and Poland. Poland will spend €280 million on this project.

On 30 April the Polish operator Gaz-System signed a contract for the construction of Baltic Pipe with the Italian company Saipem Limited.

It is planned that the gas pipeline will be put into operation on 1 October 2022.
