Poland's Foreign Ministry criticises MEP Korwin-Mikke for visiting occupied Crimea

The Polish Foreign Ministry called the conduct by Janusz Korwin-Mikke a Polish citizen and Member of the European Parliament, who visited the Autonomous Republic of Crimea without consent of the competent Ukrainian authorities, ‘highly irresponsible’.

Eurosceptic Janusz Korwin-Mike, one of the most pro-Russian politicians in Poland, flew to Crimea from Warsaw via Moscow. On Facebook the politician promised to give an interview to Russian TV channels that showed a keen interest in his trip. His aim was to get to the bottom of the situation on the peninsula.

In its turn, the Ministry rejected any attempts to portray this trip as action aimed at showing ‘the real situation’ of the peninsula’s inhabitants to the Polish public.

The diplomats stress that together with the entire European Union and a significant part of the international community, the Republic of Poland does not recognize the annexation of Crimea, and strongly distances itself from all actions and statements legitimising the violations of international law and Ukraine’s territorial integrity by the Russian Federation.

Polish citizens are obligated to comply with the regulations on foreign nationals’ stay in the entire Ukrainian territory, the Ministry reiterates.

Korwin-Mikke’s trip has already drawn strong public criticism from the public and media outlets.

According to the MEP, he was very warmly welcomed in Simferopol: only Crimean Communists were protesting against his visit. The politician states that people asked him why he had not come before – ‘if that was the case, the Ukrainians would have switched the current earlier, they say’. And put a smiley.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the politician’s visit to the annexed region.
