Pneumonia will go away, but bread is always needed - Lukashenka

During Friday’s working visit to Lida district, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has responded to criticism of his way of confronting the COVID-19 pandemic.

He mentioned ‘some people’, including from abroad, who ‘complaint that Belarus is fighting the coronavirus differently.

“At the same time, they don’t know how we are living here and how we are fighting. Especially our eastern brothers are concerned… Therefore, we should not relax. We have very few friends, even sympathisers in the world. They say we have chosen a wrong path. A system is need to choose Belarus’ path. However, even other post-Soviet republics have ruined the system completely. Infectious diseases hospitals were closed, specialists departed, no one trained microbiologists, virologists, epidemiologists. Now they are reaping the fruits and throwing stones at us,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes the Belarusian leader.

He also recalled his own recommendations to treat COVID-19 with driving a tractor and working in the field.

“Interestingly, I made a joke that the tractor would cure – and thank God, everyone is in perfect health in our village,” Lukashenka stressed.

In addition, the head of state called on Belarusians to keep developing the domestic economy and agriculture so that the production would not collapse.

“Pneumonia will go away, but people always need bread! I am not fretting over the villagers. We will cope [with the situation]. But [I am worried about] the industry… Because everything around has been halted.”

As of Friday morning, the number of the people who contracted the coronavirus infection has totalled to 4,779 (+575 over the last day); 42 persons have died, the Belarusian Health Ministry reports.
