People with disabilities protesting in Minsk

On Thursday afternoon, people with special needs, their families and friends were protesting against police abuse and persecuting dissidents in downtown. A similar peaceful rally took place in Minsk a week ago.

About a hundred persons gathered at the Red Church in Independence Square and then marched along the main avenue of the city. Some of them had white-red-white flags and symbols; many drivers were honking to show their support for the demonstrators.

Walking past the KGB headquarters, the participants chanted ‘Release!’ (some political prisoners are being held in the KGB jail); when reaching the building of the Interior Ministry, they switched to ‘[Minister Yury] Karayeu must stand trial’.

Among the marchers there was a man who had his foot amputated in the wake of the crackdown on the first wave of protests in August, 2020. On August 10, a flashbang grenade exploded in his vicinity (see the photo above).

In Kastrychnitskaya Square protesters started to disperse; no detentions have been reported.
