Peaceful protests in Armenia: Pashinyan supporters blocking traffic, roads

The protests are still ongoing in Armenia. After the ruling party refused to support the velvet revolution leader Nicol Pashinyan, he decided on a week-long nationwide strike.

The roads are being sealed across the country, Belsat TV journalist Arkadz Nestsyarenka reports from Yerevan.

“The protesters are blocking Yerevan streets, metro stations, the road from the city to the airport and the entrances to three ministries (Diaspora, Culture and Education). The entrance to the parliament building has been fenced off. There are reports that streets are also being cordoned off in Gyumri, the second largest city of Armenia. The protesters have put an ultimatum to the mayor asking whether he is ‘with the people’. If not, they demand he should resign. Part of the road to Georgia has also been closed,” he said.

Protests are expected to last until May 7. The new election of Prime Minister has been scheduled for this day.

“Despite the fact that on May 1, Pashinyan was not chosen Prime Minister, people welcomed him as a winner and chanted ‘Victory’. Some have every confidence that he will elected on the second try, while others make no bones about the legal aspects and say that the victory is already theirs,” our correspondent stressed.

In the second round, 32 parliamentary votes in support of Pashinyan will be enough. If MPs fail to elect Prime Minister at the second attempt, the parliament will be dissolved.
