Over 50% of marriages in Belarus collapse, but 90% of families consider themselves happy

The country survey showed that almost 90% of Belarusian families consider themselves to be happy.

This poll is conducted by sociologists twice a year.

Isn’t there a paradox that with a 50% rate of divorce, 89.2% of respondents said their families were happy?

“If you do not consider this as a contradiction, it turns out the opposite: families are safe, because there is freedom of divorce. People easily enter into a relationship and easily break them, create new ones. There is no need to live in a bad relationship. Therefore, if the union has taken place, it considers itself happy, “said Natallia Sasnouskaya, a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences.

In the study involving 1,500 respondents, the scientists tried to determine what the concept of family well-being consists of. It has been mathematically proven that there is no stable financial situation associated with it, as well as some other factors like good housing conditions, relations with the spouse, parents. We can say that the universal recipe for happiness simply does not exist. But, according to sociologists, each age group has its own clear vision.

For young people under 25, the most significant relationship is with their parents. This can be explained by the fact that in Belarus people marry late enough and most often live with their parents until 24.

The older group, when they marry, give birth, divorce, consider the relationship with children, spouse, financial situation to be important elements of well-being.

For the people of 45 to 60 years old, relationships with children are not so important. For them the material component, communication with the spouse and parents comes to the fore. After 60 years, the most important role is played by the partner.
