Opposition raising funds for celebrating centennial of Belarus nationhood proclamation

The national organizing committee for the celebration of the centennial of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR) has addressed the Belarusians.

“The democratic forces of the country have come together to honourably mark this date – to stage a march, rally and concert in downtown Minsk. Let’s get ready for Independence Day together! Each of us can distrubute information about the feast on 25 March so that it would be celebrated at a decent level,” the statement reads.

According to organizers, they need money for holding the event, printing flyers and stickers, making flags and banners, hiring loudspeaker equipment.

The members of the committee promise to regularly publish a report on spending funds raised.

March 25, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic. It came into existence at the end of the First World War, when Bolshevik forces left Minsk and the city was occupied by German troops. On March 25, 1918 the Provisional Government (Rada) proclaimed the independence of the BNR. After the Red Army re-entered Minsk, the Communist government replaced the Rada; its members had to emigrate.
