Opposition politician’s associates detained at authorised May Day rally

Five members of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada have been detained during today’s rally held by independent trade unions on the occasion of the Day of Labour.

Syarhei Sparysh, secretary of the party, Valyantsin Trokski, head of the Minsk city committee of the party, are among the detainees.

At the rally, the activists have raised two white-red-white flags and unfolded banners with slogans. Hramada leader and former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich owes the detention to the authorities’ intolerance of dissent.

Sparysh and Trokski are set to go on hunger strike in protest.
