Opinion: Lukashenka’s dream is transferring power to son, not Russia-Belarus union

Alyaksandr Lukashenka will never go to the length of trading his being in power for a low price for Russian gas, Nikolai Svanidze, a well-known Russian journalist and member of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, believes.

Being on the airwaves of the Echo of Moscow radio station, Svanidze delved into the so-called problem of the year 2024, i.e. the ways Vladimir Putin might use to stay in power after his second consecutive presidential term’s coming to an end. According to Svanidze, in contrast to the 2008 presidential race, now it is highly unlikely that Putin will opt for electing a successor. In his opinion, the most likely cases are removing restrictions on the number of presidential terms and making corresponding amendments to Russia’s Constitution; or Russia-Belarus uniting into one state and adopting a new Constitution.

However, the Russian journalist doubts that Alyaksandr Lukashenka is ready to give up his power.

“I cannot imagine the circumstances in which Lukashenka will exchange his being at the helm for some gas price. I cannot imagine such an option. Moreover, as it commonly know, Lukashenka has a dream. I think he will never admit to having it, since he is a very clever and cunning man. In his own way, he is remarkable and domineering. And, of course, his cherished dream is to hand over power to his son Kolya [Mikalai Lukashenka]. In case of uniting, this dream will never come true,” Svanidze stressed.
