One third of food produced in the world is lost or wasted – UN agency

On October 2, the World Food Programme (WFP) announced the launch of Stop the Waste, a global campaign to raise awareness about the 4 billion tons of edible food that is discarded daily, the UN press service reports.

Referring to its recent study, WFP, a food-assistance branch of the United Nations and the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security, states that one third of the four billion metric tonnes of food produced each year is lost or wasted, costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion annually.

According to the agency, there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. At the same time, war and unrest are forcing more people to flee their homes than at any time since the Second World War, making it difficult for millions of people to grow their own food or buy it at an affordable price, the UN experts say.

As part of the campaign, WFP has enlisted top restaurateurs and celebrity chefs from around the globe to join the movement by making their own pledge to #StopTheWaste.

Russia destroys about 320 tons of sanctioned EU food in one day. Peaches, cherries next in turn

In July 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that enacted incinerating agricultural products that are prohibited from being imported into Russia. Thousands of Russians protested against the destruction of sanctioned products. Outraged citizens are trying to draw Vladimir Putin’s attention saying that countersanctions have only resulted in an increase in food prices. Instead of destroying unwanted food they offered to send it to war-torn Donbas or distribute among the poor and refugees from Ukraine.
