Old money to be replaced by new over five years


The old-style banknotes can be exchanged for new notes until 1 January 2022.

According to the National Bank, it is now engaged in informing people, banks and companies about the introduction of new banknotes and coins. Special training sessions have been designed for bank and store cashiers for them to get familiar with the appearance and protection elements of new banknotes. Until July these trainings will be attended by 7 thousands people.

The Bank expects that on July 1, the country will have approximately 600 million of old banknotes. At the initial stage, approximately 80 million banknotes and 400 million coins of the new series will have to be introduced by the state to replace them.

The National Bank said it would have to modify the equipment used to detect fakes and installed in banks and trading facilities, accepting both old and new money.

“The process of the complete withdrawal from circulation of the old sample banknotes and their replacement with new money cannot happen overnight,” said the National Bank representative.

Old-type banknotes can be exchanged for any amount of the banknotes and coins of the new type without commission until January 1, 2022.

The National Bank reports indicate that the two categories of ATMs will continue to exist for six months in Belarus. They will process the old and new banknotes.
