NPP issue purely political -- Belarus Deputy PM

Belarus hasn’t convinced Lithuania of its NPP safety in six years, now it wants to do it in the next four days.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Uladzimir Syamashka, Belarus’ neighbors are ready to prove that the Belarusian NPP is an absolutely safe modern NPP needed by Belarus”.

Mr Syamashka said that majority of the claims to Belarus are in connection with the alleged incorrectly chosen site for the station.

“We started with 82 sites that could be used for the construction of the plant. Then we reached eleven. Then we got limited to three — two in the Mahiliou region and one in the Hrodna region, Syamashka said. – In the end, based on the set of positive factors, we chose a site in Astravets. It absolutely meets all the requirements for the construction of a nuclear power plant.”

According to Syamashka, Belarus intends to put an end to disputes with Lithuania during the 7th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Espoo Convention, which is taking place in Minsk on June 13-16.

“I think that this meeting can finally put an end to the useless argument. And we’ll be working quietly on,” said Deputy Prime Minister.

In a conversation with “Belsat” Lithuanian Seimas Deputy admitted that the Lithuanians are ‘simply scared’ of the Belarusian NPP.

“Unfortunately, there are issues. I think, they are not so much about technology but rather about security. The issue here is mostly political, far-fetched,” said Syamashka.

Proof of the NPP’s security is one of the conditions for warming of relations with Belarus, not only from Lithuania, but also the entire EU.

Belarus has been visited by a number of international inspections that verified its compliance with international standards in the construction of the station.

Syamashka said that the IAEA president noted that of the 32 countries that are on the path of the creation of nuclear energy, the highest standards in the construction of nuclear power plants are found in Belarus and Saudi Arabia.
