‘No sense’. Belarus not going to close borders over coronavirus spread

The epidemiological situation is under control; there is no ground for closing borders, Belarusian Health Minister Uladzimir Karanik told news agency BelTA on February, 28.

“Our task is to ensure control over all persons who are entering Belarus,” the minister said.

For this purpose the passengers arriving at Minsk National Airport are subject to mandatory temperature screening. The situation is being monitored at all international border crossing check points as well.

In turn, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka believes that the closure of borders will not be a panacea for the woe. According to him, all necessary measures have already been taken.

“Will it change anything if we shut down borders? Borders were closed, but the virus has spread all over the world. It does not make any sense to close borders when population mobility is so high,” BelTA quotes the Belarusian leader.

He has urged Belarusians not to overreact, as, in his opinion, panic might resilt in a shortage of medicines and protective means.

As reported earlier, the first case of СOVID-19 was detected in Belarus. On February 27, an Iranian national who is studying at the Belarusian National Technical University tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
