No country meddling in Belarus elections – KGB chairman

No strong measures will be put in place by the KGB during the upcoming election campaigns, Valery Vakulchyk, Chairman of the Belarusian State Security Committee, told journalists on Friday.

When asked about the plausibility of ane country’s meddling in the Belarusian elections, he said that such things were unlikely to happen.

“I do not see any reason to talk about interference in the elections in our country. We are a sovereign state and meddling in our affairs is not allowed. Countering spying is in our scope, it is not in the limelight, but it exists. No strong measures are needed,” the top official stressed.

According to the KGB chairman, two people who were staying in the country were declared persona non grata last week, because the Committee had identified them as spies. However, he refused to specify which country they were citizens of.

Commenting on the situation of Ukrainian journalist Pavlo Sharoiko, whom Belarus accused of espionage and sentenced to 8 years in prison, Vakulchyk noted that a special commission would start considering the case of pardoning him. There was no negotiating about any prisoner swap with the Ukrainian side, he added.
