New sport in Belarus could become national

Teams playing swamp football appear throughout the Hrodna region.

“Last year we held the first competition in this unusual sport. People really liked it, so now we offer to actively develop it,” said Deputy Chairman of the Hrodna Oblast Executive Committee Viktar Liskovich.

According to the official, in the summer, swamp training fields will be created in all districts of the Hrodna region and teams will be formed. In August, the 2nd Open Oblast Championship will be held during the Festival “August Canal in the Culture of Three Nations” near “Dambrouka” Gateway.

Teams will consist of five people and the goalkeeper. To win, they will have to play at least 10 minutes in the mud. Previous competitions have shown that the test is not easy and requires serious preparation. The winner of the tournament is determined not only by the number of points earned, but also on how dirty each of the players ends up.

Open format of the tournament allows participation of not only regional teams, but also of all those interested.

The first swamp football championship last year had only 20 male and 4 female teams. This year the organizers are hoping to also have teams from Lithuania and Poland.

Swamp soccer was born in Finland, the world championship in it is held annually in the village Hyrynsalmi in July at a local swamp stadium. Rules of the game resemble the traditional football, rugby and even hockey. The fans and the participants believe the sport is one of the most spectacular and interesting.

With its swamps, Belarus may try to stop dreaming about hockey and become a world center of Suopotkupallo.
