New death penalty case in Belarus?


The 22-year-old man is accused of attempted murder of two women.

The investigation of the case is almost complete. The police found out that on the night of September 8, 2017, the young man stabbed a 27-year-old woman and her 28-year-old friend. One of the women died on the spot from injuries, the other one ran away and managed to report the crime to the school guard, who called an ambulance. According to the forensic examination, her bodily injuries are classified as serious.

It also became known that the accused is involved in other crimes.

“On August 23, 2011, the young man, together with his classmate, openly seized more than 690K of non-denominated rubles worth of property of the shopping center in Minsk. At the same time, the men threatened a woman seller with an item similar to a pistol,” the Investigative Committee reports.

The 22-year-old man was eventually charged with committing crimes under Part 1 of Art. 14, p. 1 part 2 of Art. 139, p. 6, Art. 2, 139 (attempted murder of two persons, with particular cruelty) and part 2 of Art. 207 (robbery committed by a group of persons) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. According to paragraph 6 of Part 2 of Art. 139 the accused face imprisonment for a term of 8 to 25 years, or life imprisonment, or the death penalty.
