National Bank explains inflation acceleration in Belarus

The weakening of the Belarusian ruble and the coronavirus pandemic have led to accelerated inflation in March 2020, the review of the National Bank of Belarus states.

According to the National Bank, the annual growth of consumer prices accelerated in March and amounted to 4.9%. Compared to February 2020, consumer prices rose in March 2020 by 0.85%.

“Acceleration of inflation in the reporting month was largely due to increased demand resulting from uncertainty about the future situation, as well as the introduction of restrictive measures by many countries to overcome the unfavorable epidemiological situation, as well as weakening of the Belarusian ruble against hard currencies,” the review of the National Bank says.

In February, annual growth of consumer prices amounted to 4.4%, while in January it was 4.7%.
