MP and former Russian prisoner Nadiya Savchenko was arrested in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.
She is suspected of allegedly plotting an armed coup through acts of terrorism. On March 15, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko told the Rada that investigators had irrefutable evidence that Savchenko was planning terror attacks – explosions in the parliamentary session hall.
Savchenko was detained in the presence of journalists after the parliament stripped her of immunity and sanctioned her detention and arrest, Censor.NET reports. She has been taken to the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to Prosecutor General, the woman personally proposed officers Berezen, Zakharchenkov, Leshch, and Kot to commit terrorist attacks aimed at killing Ukraine’s top authorities, seizure of government building, creating chaos, overthrowing the constitutional order and power grabbing. The group also planned to shell downtown Kyiv with mortars, he states.
As reported earlier, Volodymyr Ruban, Head of the Officer Corps’ prisoner release center, was detained at a Donbas checkpoint on March 8 while trying to smuggle an arsenal of weapons into the part of Ukraine not controlled by Kyiv. The motions state that Savchenko met in unclear circumstances with Ruban, who knew the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Alexander Zakharchenko and Alexander Timofeev, Interfax Ukraine reports.
