Mediterranean: Russian Su-33 crashes while attempting to land on Kuznetsov aircraft carrier


The Russian Navy have lost another aircraft during Admiral Kuznetsov operations, which has been confirmed by Russia’s Defense Ministry.

A Su-33 Flanker carrier-based multirole aircraft crashed during flight operations from Admiral Kuznetsov on Saturday, Dec. 3, theaviationist.com reports with reference to its own sources.

According to the report, the combat plane crashed at its second attempt to land on the aircraft carrier in good weather conditions: it seems that it missed the wires and failed to go around falling short of the bow of the warship. The pilot successfully ejected.On November 14, U.S. media reported the crash of a MiG-29K while recovering to the aircraft carrier.

In October, the Russian squadron passed through the English Channel in the direction of the Mediterranean Sea and Syria. Among the vessels was heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov (the former name – “Leonid Brezhnev”). The video shows the ship’s power plant releasing black smoke into the sky. Online commentators wrote about environmental concerns and joked that the aircraft carrier was on fire.
