Moscow sociologists: Nearly 90% of Belarusians in favour of alliance with Russia


89.4% of Belarusians are in favour of the alliance and partnership with Russia, a survey conducted by the Centre for Spatial Analysis of International Relations of the MGIMO Institute for International Studies shows.

The results of the survey that was part of the project ‘Transformation of electoral behaviour in the regions of foreign countries sharing borders with the Russian Federation: comparative spatial analysis’ have been published by the Russian newspaper kommersant.ru.

The pollster made over 7,000 telephone calls and collected 500 complete in all regions of Belarus.

When asked the question “What relations with Russia do you consider to be the most appropriate for Belarus?” 57.6% of respondents answered ‘ally’s’, 31.8% – ‘partnership’, 10.2% – ‘neutral’, 0.2% – ‘hostile’.

The Russian sociologists have also found out how often Belarusians travel to Russia. According to them, 21.4% of Belarusians visit Russia a few times a year, 55.4% – once a year or more rarely; 23.2% of interviewees have never been to Russia.

At the same time, the Belarusian sociologist team led by Andrey Vardamatski said that only 54% of local respondents believed that Belarus should remain part of the union with Russia; 25% were in favour of joining the European Union.

Interestingly, July’s report by EU Neighbours east project reads that around one in two Belarusians tend to trust the European Union (51%), the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) (48%) and the United Nations (UN) (47%).
