More severe punishment for corruption in Belarus

On May 10, Alyaksandr Lukashenka signed decree “On additional measures to combat corruption,” the press service of the head of state reports.

The decree aims to strengthen the penalties for corruption crimes. In accordance with the document, persons convicted of committing corruption offenses are not eligible for parole or replacement of the unserved part of the punishment with a lighter one.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Justice Syarhey Zadziran told BelTA that the new decree would play a serious preventive role.

The decree identifies ten specific articles of the Criminal Code, which will be applied to corruption crimes. The Ministry of Justice was in charge of the development of the document for more than six months on appointment of President Lukashenka.

The regulatory legal act will enter into force after official publication. At the same time, the government is to ensure the development of a draft law that will amend the Criminal Code in the relevant part.
