Minsk set to change payment terms of Russian loan for NPP construction

The Belarusian authorities have stated that they have almost reached an agreement with Moscow to change the terms of the Russian state loan for the construction of the nuclear power plant in Astravets. According to the Minister of Energy of Belarus, the new conditions will soon be approved by the Russian side.

“This issue is still under consideration, so I can’t tell you about any final results. This is work in progress, and I hope there will soon be some results,” Energy Minister of Belarus Viktar Karankevich was quoted by interfax.

The Belarusian side stated the need to change the terms of the Russian loan in the spring of this year. Russia has allocated a state loan of $10 billion for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Astravets for 25 years. But now the official Minsk has initiated negotiations to lengthen the loan repayment period to 35 years. In addition, Belarus wants to reduce the interest rate on the loan.
