Minsk: Protester against institutional homophobia to stand trial

A protocol has been drawn upon LGBT activist Vika Biran for ‘holding a one-man picket’. Interestingly, at the same time the policemen called it a ‘mass event’.

The girl refused to give them any explanations.

On May 24, protesting against the recent homophobic statement by the Interior Ministry, LGBT activist Vika Biran had her pictures taken in front of the ministerial building, the KGB headquarters and the House of Government. She was holding the poster ‘It Is You Who Are Fake’. At the same time, Vika stressed that her actions could hardly be called ‘picketing’, she was just photographed near official buildings with the poster in her hands.

Apart from public supports, she also received a lot of negative comments:

‘In the Slavic world, there is no place for f**gots, lesbians and other degenerates’

“I think they [opponents] would never understand me. At the police station, a Major was reading out the article Citydog wrote about me. He gave a lecture about family, children, family values, called me ‘alleged lesbian’.” The protocol reads: ‘She took part in an unauthorized mass event (picketing) which was held without the permission of Minsk City Executive Committee in order to express her personal attitude to the LGBT community, which resulted in a public display of the poster with the inscription It Is You Who Are Fake’,” Vika Biran said.

There are police officers whose task is reading news and reporting to superiors who should be taken control over, the activist stressed.

“As my lawyer was present at the meeting, they [policemen] were quite contained. However, it was clear that if it was not for the lawyer, he would not have minced his words,” Vika told belsat.eu.

As reported earlier, the Belarusian Ministry expressed resentment over the fact that the British Embassy in Minsk displayed a rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBT community, on May 17. The ministry’s controversial stance has not gone unnoticed by foreign media.
