Minsk: Opposition activists detained after remembrance event


Dzyanis Urbanovich, the leader of youth organization Young Front, and activist Volha Nikalaichyk were detained by plainclothes policeman after Monday’s rally in memory of Mikhail Zhyzneuski, a Belarusian-born defender of Maidan, who was killed by pro-Yanukovych special forces on January 22, 2014.

The memorial event timed to coincide with the 5th anniversary of his death started at 18.00 near the monunebt to Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko in Minsk. The activists brought a photo of Zhyzneuski to the monument, lit candles, sang the Belarusian March of the Warriors and the national anthem of Ukraine. Seven persons took part in the rally, some made brief speeches.

“If there is a need to lay down lives life for Belarus, there will be people who will do it. Now we must come together to confront imperial Moscow,” Urbanovich said.

After the rally, four policemen in civvies were following the activists escorting them to a bus stop and getting in the bus. As a result, the officers detained Urbanovich and Nikalaichyk in Yakub Kolas Square.

(UPD) On January 23, Tsentralny distict court in Minsk has imposed heavy fines on the activists.
