The Minsk police grabbed former political prisoner Zmitser Dashkevich during Sunday’s authorised concert on the occasion of 101st anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR) right in front of the eyes of his pregnant wife Nasta Dashkevich and other attendees.

Shortly before the detention, Dashkevich delivered a speech sharply criticizing suppressors of freedom and enemies of Belarus’ independence. He also recalled the crimes of the Soviet regime.

“Freedom Day is what unites us. This day is a highlight in the calendar. It is even an occasion for ‘shunyavkas’[an uncharitable nickname of Belarusian policemen], pro-Russian deniables, propagandists and the impostor [Alyaksandr Lukashenka]. If not for March 25 and independence, they would have no place and country for their actions. So, let’s congratulate them as well,” Dashkevich said from the stage.

Later, it became know that the activist was being held in the predetention facility. He may stand trial soon, his friends believe.

“We think that Zmitser Dashkevich will be taken to Tsentralny district court of Minsk,” Pavel Sevyarynets told Belsat.
