Belarusian man wanted for murder for 20 years detained in Spain


Homiel police found In Spain a Belarusian man wanted for murder for 20 years, said Viktar Chykunou, Head of Criminal Investigation Department of Homiel Oblast Executive Committee at a press conference.

The Kalinkavichy resident had been wanted for murder since 1996. The man was found in Spain. Last year the Belarusian was extradited by the Spanish side, he was tried in Belarus. The sentence came into force. After fleeing from justice for 20 years, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison – the maximum sentence – said Viktar Chykunou.

The man was a member of a criminal group, which engaged in robbery in the mid-90s in the territory of Kalinkavichy and Mazyr districts: they attacked truck drivers who were transporting the goods through the territory of Belarus. Members of the gang were accused of murder, attempted murder and robbery. Name of the convicted person shall not be disclosed.

“The emergence of new information technologies and expert capabilities, as well as close cooperation with other law enforcement agencies has increased the crime solving rate,” added the head of the Criminal Investigation Department.
