MEP urges politicians, fans to keep away from 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia

Rebecca Harms, a member of the Alliance ’90/The Greens, part of the European Green Party, has called on politicians and fans to boycott the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

According to the German MEP, Russia is not a country to host such an event. If the tournament is held in Russia, Vladimir Putin will get ‘too much attention’, she warns.

Putin will be basking in glory on the stage of a supposedly neutral sport in the presence of international guests although he continues his anti-democratic policies that no democrat can approve of, Harms said in an interview to Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on December 2.

In her opinion, the decision of German ex-President Joachim Gauck not to visit the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi is ‘exemplary’.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018. The final tournament will involve 32 national teams. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities.
