Minsk authorities find man who drew barbed wire on emblem of Belarus-Russia friendship

Minsk authorities identified an anonymous artist and want him to pay for the restoration of the giant emblem of Belarus-Russia friendship painted on the wall of the 12-storey block of flats in Mahiliouskaya Street in Minsk, Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Andrey Shorats said at Wednesday’s press conference.

In the summer of 2016, its authors, Russia’s company Novatek, made a picture of a Belarusian boy giving flowers to a Russian girl in the run-up of Russia Day which is celebrated on June, 12. There is also the inscription ‘Moscow-Minsk’ and a heart in the colors of the Belarusian and the Russian flags.

But in October, the mural was ‘completed’: barbed wire was drawn on the bouquet and the wreath. The city authorities had to paint over ‘spikes’.

“The graffiti appeared during the Days of Moscow, the sketch was agreed. I believe it to be irrelevant when someone comes and completes it in line with their own likes and personal motives. Letting the things running its course is a road to nowhere otherwise eceryone can draw where they want and what they want. We will recover all the damages without fail,” the official said.

Andrey Shorats did not reveal the name of the artist, but added that the necessary documents were being prepared for taking legal action.
