Maryia Kalesnikava's lawyer detained in Minsk


In the afternoon of September 24, lawyer Lyudmila Kazak disappeared in Minsk. As it turned out, she was detained.

At 13:50, Lyudmila Kazak parted with her colleague, whom she met on Kamunisychnaya Street. She hurried to the court session. She never came to court, though. The car was parked at Kamunistychnaya, TUT.by writes.

According to eyewitnesses, the lawyer was detained at 13:50 by unknown persons opposite Kamunistychnaya, 24. She was put in a Geely car (plate number 8971 TA-7). The woman shouted “Help!” many times, Nasha Niva reports.

The press secretary of the Municipal Department of Internal Affairs of the Minsk City Executive Committee Natallya Hanusevich told TASS later that Lyudmila Kazak was detained for an administrative offense.

“She was detained for committing an administrative offense, we do not specify which. She is in one of the territorial police departments of Minsk,” said Hanusevich.

(UPD) On September 25, Lyudmila Kazak was tried in Kastrychnitski district court of Minsk. She was found guilty of disobeying police officers; a fine of 675 Belarusian rubles was imposed on her.

  • Maryia Kalesnikava was arrested in the framework of a criminal case on public calls for actions aimed at causing damage to national security (part 3 of Art. 361 of the Criminal Code), initiated by the General Prosecutor’s Office.
  • With regard to Kalesnikava and Maksim Znak, with the approval of the prosecutor, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of detention. Illya Saley, Kalesnikava’s former lawyer, was also detained.
  • On September 7, the special services kidnapped Maryia Kalesnikava and planned to forcibly take her abroad. However, the operations of the special services failed: in the neutral zone on the border, Maryia tore her passport, jumped out of the car and returned to Belarusian territory.
