Ukraine to introduce martial law on Wednesday

The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada has approved the decree of President Petro Poroshenko on the imposition of martial law.

The decision was approved by 276 deputies.

In accordance with the presidential decree, martial law will be imposed from 9 am on November 28 in 10 regions of the country — those bordering Russia, Transnistria and the Black Sea coast, as well as in Chernihiv region bordering Belarus.

Poroshenko listed these regions: Vinnitsa, Luhansk, Nikolaev, Odessa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kherson and inland waters of the Azov-Kerch water area.

Martial law will last 30 days — until December 27.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Paruby stressed that martial law will be imposed for a period of 30 days instead of 60, and the presidential election will be held on March 31, 2019.

The introduction of martial law was initiated by the NSDC secretary Oleksandr Turchynov after Russia seized three Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait.
