Many happy returns: Belarus Nobel laureate sends birthday wishes to Nadiya Savchenko

Ukrainian aviatrix Nadiya Savchenko has turned 35 on May, 11. Unfortunately, Nadiya cannot have a birthday party as she is still kept in Russian prison.

Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich, the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature holder, extended her best wishes to Nadiya Savchenko, the newspaper Nasha Niva reports.

“Dear Nadiya! Always remember that our thoughts are with you. And I want to say that your mother, is wonderful – I met with her in Kyiv. I do believe that I will see you soon, Nadiya!” Alexievich said in her message.

Svetlana Alexievich keeps supporting the captive pilot. In December 2015, she sent her book and letter to Savchenko, calling her a Ukrainian Joan of Arc.

On March 22, the Donetsk city court of the Rostov region found the Ukrainian pilot guilty of murdering two Russian journalists and sentenced her to 22 years in prison. The sentence has come into effect.

Savchenko denies her guilt. According to the defense, she was kidnapped by terrorists in LPR and then taken out to Russia. Savchenko has been in custody since July 2014.

On April 18, Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to immediately liberate the Ukrainian when speaking over the phone. They also discussed the issue of Russian servicemen Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Alexander Alexandrov who were arrested in the territory of Ukraine in the summer of 2015.

Savchenko’s lawyers have not ruled out that their client received the documentation necessary for her extradition.
