Man sets himself ablaze in the heart of Minsk

Protesting against the court decision, a Belarusian citizen attempted to set himself on fire in Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk.

The suicidal attempt occurred on Thursday at about 17:45, Tut.by reports with reference to eyewitnesses.

Two riot policemen who happened to be in the square, quickly tore the burning clothes off the self-destroyer and extinguished them. The incident lasted approximately two minutes.

Later, state-run TV station Belarus 1 reported that the situation had been sort of a gesture of despair of the man.

The resident of Minsk had been married for 10 years, a child was born to them. But later the couple divorced. The Belarusian court set a fixed number of his meetings with the child, but the man was not satisfied with it. He appealed to the Supreme Court, but the decision remained unchanged. The man also resorted to the Administration of the President, but in vain.

In the end, the father sank into despair, poured gasoline on himself and set himself ablaze. Saved by the riot policemen, the casualty is in hospital at the moment.
