Lukashenka wants different punishment for drug consumers and suppliers

The head of Belarus stated this on May 22, meeting with the Interior Minister Ihar Shunevich.

Lukashenka did not specify the difference in the responsibility for consumers and suppliers of drugs. He asked Shunevich about the criminal situation in the country. Particular attention was paid to combating the spread of drugs.

“Maybe we made some mistakes in the adoption of the relevant legislation. I then insisted on strengthening the legislation especially regarding those who produce, supply, and sell drugs here. We need to strictly differentiate consumers and suppliers,” Lukashenka said.

According to Shunevich, the crime situation in the country can be described as “a decrease in recorded crimes and incidents”. He noted that “there are no specific features”.

The “Mothers 328” movement is trying to have the long drug-related sentences revised and soften the narcotics legislation. Since April 27, the activists in Kalinkavichy and Pukhavichy district were on a hunger strike, and for 10 days their colleagues were on a similar strike in Lida. The women demanded a meeting with Lukashenka, but he did not meet with them. One of the starving mothers Tatsiana Kaneuskaya was hospitalized, she is soon to be operated on.

On May 11, it became known that the Council of Ministers had sent a bill to the House of Representatives with the amendment to Article 328.
